Steve Chan

New York State Senator, District 17

Steve Chan is the New York State Senator for District 17 in southern Brooklyn, elected in November 2024 when he flipped a seat drawn as New York City’s first Asian-majority Senate district.

A former NYPD sergeant and longtime Bensonhurst community figure, Chan defeated first-term Democratic incumbent Iwen Chu in November 2024, 54.7% to 44.9%. His victory flipped a district that is 44% Asian and that voted Trump+23 at the presidential level in 2020 — a signature result of southern Brooklyn’s political realignment.

His January 8, 2025 inauguration was covered by the New York State Senate itself. District 17 covers Bath Beach, Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Kensington, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst and Gravesend.

Chan is up for re-election on November 3, 2026, against Democrat Larry He.
