Accessibility statement

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision, are deaf or hard of hearing, have limited mobility, or have cognitive and photosensitivity-related needs — and they improve the site for everyone.

Measures built into this site include:

• Descriptive alternative text on photographs and portraits, so screen readers can describe every meaningful image.
• A “Skip to main content” link as the first item on every page, and a consistent landmark structure (header, navigation, main, footer) so pages are easy to navigate by keyboard or screen reader.
• Every form field has a programmatically associated label, consent is never assumed, and form status messages are announced politely to assistive technology.
• A visible focus indicator for keyboard users on every link, button, and input.
• Text that meets contrast targets of at least 4.5:1, with darkening scrims behind text placed over photography.
• Motion that respects your system’s “reduce motion” setting — decorative animation stops, and the scrolling ticker pauses when you hover or focus it.
• Descriptive, unique page titles and link names that make sense out of context.
• Plain English throughout, including our voting guides and legal pages.

Some parts of the site are outside our full control. Donations are processed by WinRed and email signups by Mailchimp; those third-party services are operated by other organizations and may not meet every part of the same standard. A small number of historical and archival photographs may carry less detailed descriptions, and contrast over photographic backgrounds, while protected by scrims and shadows, can vary with the image itself. We review these areas as the site evolves.
