Michael Novakhov
New York State Assemblymember, District 45
Michael “Misha” Novakhov is the New York State Assemblymember for the 45th district, the heart of Russian-speaking Brooklyn, which he flipped in 2022 on a public-safety platform.
Born in Baku, Soviet Azerbaijan, to a Jewish family that fled communism, Novakhov is a self-described secular Jew living in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. Before politics he founded and hosted on Freedom FM, Brooklyn’s Russian-language radio station.
In 2022 he flipped AD-45, routing 22-year incumbent Steven Cymbrowitz by roughly 19 points. In 2024 he narrowly won re-election against Democrat Joey Cohen-Saban in one of the closest Assembly races in the state.
